The Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick intends to appoint an Assistant Professor to teach on and develop our new English and History joint degree. The appointment will commence on 1 January 2018.

We seek an outstanding scholar who specialises in reading literature and culture as historically embedded – socially and materially – and who is keen to provide innovative teaching in this area, including the design and delivery of new modules. The successful candidate will engage with the intersection of literature and history at the level of theory in both their research and teaching. We welcome applications from all those working in, and critically reflecting upon, the field of cultural history, whether within the context of British, European, North American, or World literature.

You will possess a PhD or equivalent; will have an emergent or already established international reputation in an appropriate field of study; and will have relevant teaching experience. You will also demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence and will join a teaching team with strengths in innovative teaching methods, including open-space learning and practical workshops, as well as more traditional lectures and seminars.

You will contribute to the teaching on the core modules of the English and History degree, and will develop new modules as your specialist research-led teaching. You will also contribute teaching in your research area to the Department’s MA programme and will supervise PhD research. You will join a vibrant culture and research environment, in the department and the Arts Faculty, and will foster research connections and collaborations with colleagues in the Department in History. In REF 2014, the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies was ranked 1st in the UK.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will give presentations and be interviewed on the afternoon of Thursday 28 September 2017. Long-listed candidates will be asked to send a sample of their research to the Department Office.
