The British Association for American Studies was founded in 1955. It exists to promote, support and encourage the study of the United States in the Universities, Colleges and Schools of the United Kingdom, and by independent scholars. It welcomes application forms from all those engaged in or connected with the study of the United States.

BAAS is a constituent member of the European Association for American Studies, and nominates a member of the EAAS board. All members of BAAS receive the EAAS Newsletter and Bulletin, and may attend thebiennial conference of EAAS. BAAS has an affiliation agreement with the American Studies Association in the United States. Members of BAAS are entitled to participate in ASA meetings and to pay the same registration fee as ASA members. In addition BAAS members can become affiliated foreign scholar members of ASA.
