University of Central Lancashire, April 14 -17 2011The 56th Annual ConferenceThe fifty-sixth British Association for American Studies Conference will be held at the School of Journalism, Media and Communication, incorporating American Studies, at the University of Central Lancashire from 14 - 17 April 2011. There is no overarching theme for the conference, and papers and panel proposals are welcomed on any subject related to the United States of America and early America. The conference will feature papers from a wide range of disciplines and play host to an international collection of scholars from across the spectrum of the research community, from postgraduates to senior scholars. Interdisciplinarity is very welcome, and we are also happy to accept proposals for roundtable discussions, poster sessions, or other innovative panel ideas that we can incorporate into the conference schedule.

The University of Central Lancashire has been a pioneering centre for research and teaching in the field of American Studies since the early 1990s. It was one of only three American Studies sections to gain the top mark for teaching excellence from HEFCE in 1998 and subsequently received funding for a major curriculum project on Americanisation, AMATAS that ran from 2000-2004. Expertise at UCLAN ranges from nineteenth-century literature through popular music to slave memorials and the black Atlantic. American Studies at UCLAN features innovative sessions, with the use of drama and live music as key components of the curriculum. Preston’s links to America through trade are long-lasting, reaching their zenith during the Lancashire Cotton famine of the 1860s where the Civil War’s consequences were felt by local populations.
